{"id":716,"date":"2009-11-26T03:43:45","date_gmt":"2009-11-26T11:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pluginamerica.eh\/a-smart-decision-by-daimler\/"},"modified":"2023-03-07T12:59:18","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T17:59:18","slug":"smart-decision-daimler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pluginamerica.org\/smart-decision-daimler\/","title":{"rendered":"A Smart Decision by Daimler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve had a &#8220;thing&#8221; for Daimler&#8217;s little Smart car since my trip to Paris in 2006 where I observed that the avenues were lined with legions of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/files\/2009\/01\/smart-car-interview-dave-schembri.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diesel Smarts<\/a>. Since then, the appealing miniature perfection of the snobbish little automotive beast has simply turned my head and turned me on. I&#8217;ve subsequently assumed that an electric version must be just around the production corner and probably due to hit assembly lines somewhere in the world. The Smart&#8217;s shape does, after all, seem to naturally lend itself to electric drive.<\/p>\n<p>And I was right. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daimler.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daimler<\/a> will begin production of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/files\/2009\/08\/daimler-smart-electric-drive-car-fortwo.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">electric Smart ForTwo<\/a> this month in Hambach, France. The 30 kW electric motor will be powered by a 14 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The rather disappointing 60-miles-per-hour top speed coupled with a 71-mile (or 115-kilometer) range pretty much guarantees that this EV&#8217;s primary use will be confined to city driving for now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a0120a635cd9d970c0120a6dbb224970b selected  alignright\" title=\"A Stack of Smarts\" src=\"https:\/\/pluginamerica.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/6a0120a635cd9d970c0120a6dbb224970b-500pi.jpg\" alt=\"A Stack of Smarts\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Look for fleets of the electric Smart ForTwo in Rome, Milan, Hamburg and other European cities as well as selected U.S. cities, with availability to the public in 2012, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/autopia\/2009\/11\/electric-smart-production-begins\/\">Autopia<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teslamotors.com\">Tesla Motors<\/a> has lent its engineering and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/autopia\/2009\/05\/daimler_tesla\/\">battery expertise<\/a> to Daimler, and the second-generation Smart forTwo will share some DNA with the Tesla roadster. The electric Smart will accelerate from 0 to 30 mph in 6.5 seconds, which is not exactly Tesla territory.
